Baylon said not all Montana transplants are remote workers buying property and driving up prices. AdvertisementThis is an as-told-to essay based on a conversation with 34-year-old Ian Baylon, a tradesman who moved from California to Montana in April 2022. Here in Montana there's a huge shortage of labor too. While it was very competitive in California, there's a lot of demand for the trades up here, but nobody up here really wants to learn the trades. A lot work in tech or finance, and there's no need for them to work locally.

Meta CTO says Mark Zuckerberg uses the 'eye of Sauron' to assess the company's most important tasks. Employees should also aim to work on less flashy projects with equally high importance, he said. AdvertisementMeta CTO Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth said that employees should always try to work on projects of the highest importance. And at Meta, that comes with Mark Zuckerberg's 'Eye of Sauron.' If you haven't watched the Lord of the Rings, the Eye of Sauron is the ever-watching gaze of the Dark Lord, which Frodo and his companions must avoid.

Mark Zuckerberg put out an Instagram video reviewing the Apple Vision Pro this week. AdvertisementHaving not personally tested both devices, I am not fully qualified to judge whether Mark Zuckerberg's video review accurately compares Apple's Vision Pro to the Meta Quest 3. Mark Zuckerberg has entered his Posting Era. I don't attempt to think too hard about Mark Zuckerberg's inner life, but I don't get the sense that what we're seeing is a window into his soul. What I see now is something I never thought might happen: Mark Zuckerberg is getting high on his own supply.

Meta in 2020 officially formed the Responsible AI (RAI) team with about 30 members of staff. Over the last year, the group's numbers have dwindled, according to five people familiar with the company and its AI work. The Responsible AI team was restructuredJerome Pesenti, who was vice president of Meta's AI group, including the RAI team, left last summer and founded his own AI company Sizzle AI. Mentors can give us advice and guidance, helping us in ways that others, who are too close to the problem, never can. When I sought her advice, she didn't tell me where I should choose to go; instead, she gave me this kernel of wisdom. He advised me to defer my acceptance and try to get into business school instead. I was about to learn that the skills that make you a great individual contributor PM do not always make you a great manager. If you don't have a mentor, I highly recommend finding one (check out my last post on mentors for tips!).
18 months ago, Zuckerberg bet the future of Facebook on the metaverse, and even changed the company's name. Some analysts are now concerned about Meta spending too much on AI, Zuckerberg's latest obsession. Just 18 months ago, Mark Zuckerberg bet the future of Facebook on the metaverse, and even changed the company's name to Meta. Investors and analysts only just recovered from the company's metaverse spending splurge. Meta reports quarterly results April 26, and Wall Street will be watching the company's spending and investment plans closely.
In cities both small and large, some locals are calling out short-term rentals for making housing more expensive. The same question is perplexing local governments and fueling impassioned locals to weigh in: What should we do about Airbnb-style, short-term rentals? Jacob Boomsma/Getty ImagesFor Bozeman Tenants United, it's simple math: Bozeman homes should be occupied by Bozeman residents first, before out-of-towners. Formed in 2020, Bozeman Tenants United surveyed Bozeman residents on the most pressing issues in local housing and landed on short-term rentals. Fire Thunder said the increase of short-term rentals and vacation-owned properties is just one harbinger of a concerning trend.
More than 1,000 people, including Elon Musk, recently signed a letter calling for a pause on AI development. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said: "Not only is it unrealistic, I don't think it would be effective." "I think it's very important to invest in responsible development," Bosworth told the outlet, "and we do that kind of investment all the time. And so I think, not only is it unrealistic, I don't think it would be effective." "Shutting down AI development for six months gives the bad guys six more months to catch up," he said.
Meta is cutting the price of its VR headsets, which are a big part of its metaverse ambitions. The high-end Meta Quest Pro will be reduced from $1,500 to $1,000. The headset has had mixed reviews and suffered "underwhelming sales," The Verge reported. The price of the 256GB Meta Quest 2 will drop from $500 to $430, while the higher-end Meta Quest Pro will get a $500 haircut to $1,000. They've been matched by "underwhelming sales," Alex Heath of The Verge reported in his Command Line newsletter on Friday.
Meta's chief technology officer reportedly told employees it's not making a second Quest Pro headset. The $1,499 Quest Pro headset has received poor reviews and sales, and was costly for Meta to make. The company's Reality Labs division saw a $13.7 billion loss in 2022, according to its fourth-quarter financial results. However, Meta's Quest 2, which is more affordable than the Quest Pro, has done "quite well," according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The Quest Pro is getting a $500 chop, while the 256 GB Quest 2, which is originally $499.99, is being cut to $429.99.
Mark Zuckerberg says this will be the "year of efficiency" at Meta, signaling more cuts ahead. His comments reflect a new reality for tech: The era of deep pockets and endless perks is over. Enter Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook's parent company Meta, who officially rang in the new era on Wednesday when he declared that 2023 would be the "year of efficiency" at the social network. Instead of throwing money and manpower at problems, Zuckerberg shows that Meta is now learning to live within its means. For those who remain, perks will be stripped back as a new culture of efficiency upends the tech office culture to which they've grown accustomed over the last two decades or so.
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said he misses the days when the company was more focused. In a blog post, he called out the firm's philanthropy and worker perks as areas that could "create drag." Bosworth and a spokesperson for Meta did not respond to a request for comment regarding the company's charitable donations. The tech chief said this "pernicious problem" has even higher stakes than the shift toward charitable donations. Meta has more than halved its value since the company changed its name and Zuckerberg announced the company was pivoting to focus on the metaverse.
Bosworth's post landed just days before Meta's fourth-quarter earnings report, which is to be released after the bell on Wednesday. The Facebook parent company is expected to report its third consecutive quarterly sales drop, with analysts projecting another decline in the first quarter. Bosworth was promoted to the top tech post in 2021, replacing Mike Schroepfer, who had been with the company since 2008. While he acknowledged that he doesn't miss startup life, "I do miss the profound sense of focus," Bosworth wrote. In contrast, using nonprofits as an example, he noted that in the early days of the company employees would ask Zuckerberg to support a group or cause.
